How Hard Water and Scaling Affects the Body

Hard water makes it much more difficult for your skin to absorb the moisture it needs to appear and remain healthy. Although you may use moisturizing shower gel and pricey facial remedies, hard water will be fighting against you the whole way leaving your skin persistently dry, no matter what you do. The buildup of these minerals on your skin can also block the flow of natural oils through your skin causing breakouts, acne, rosacea, and even inflammation. The use of hard water on the skin has also been found to affect the body’s natural cooling system - sweat. This can lead to increased blood flow and higher body temperature during times of physical activity.

Renowned Manhattan Dermatologist Dr. Dennis Gross, founder of the MD Skincare line of products, discovered that impurities in tap water, such as iron, copper, magnesium, lead and zinc, can act as free radicals. Free radicals bond with healthy skin cells and immediately begin destroying them, setting off a chain reaction of cell destruction. This chain reaction can lead to the breakdown of collagen, cause redness and irritation, enlarge the appearance of pores and lead to the formation of fine lines, wrinkles or even acne.

Typical Scale Build Up

Hard water is known to be a sort of universal difficulty, especially among those living in rural areas. The deposits of salts and minerals can wreak havoc on your hair, leave a scaly residue in bathtubs, toilets, and sinks, and cause faucets to rust much more quickly than usual. The taste leaves much to be desired, unless one desires to know the flavor of rocks. As such, hard water isn’t considered very dangerous to our health.

When water-borne minerals, such as calcium bicarbonate, revert to their solid carbonate state, limescale is formed in water systems and this narrows pipes, blocks jets, slows the flow, reduces thermal efficiency and provides a breeding ground for bacteria.
Bacteria, including Legionella Pneumophila, proliferate in water systems with even moderate amounts of scaling, particularly in systems where scale prevents water reaching sufficient temperature to act as a biocide.

The side effect to be expected is that biofilm fouling in process water will dramatically be reduced due to the cleaning effect of Scalewatcher®. The breeding ground of bacteria disappears, so will the bacterium. This effect is noticeable in swimming pools but also in cooling towers. A cooling tower can run without chemicals to inhibit scale, corrosion and the growth of biofilm, when using Scalewatcher®.

The Problem of Dihydrogen Monoxide (DHMO)

A major component of hard water, however, is Dihydrogen Monoxide (DHMO) also known as hydric acid. DHMO is known to be a contributor to acid rain, global warming and soil erosion. According to the Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) on DHMO, it is potentially hazardous to humans and animals. Under certain circumstances DHMO can react violently when combined with specific substances, and it’s known that DHMO’s mingling with the trace minerals in hard water contributes directly to the inconveniences that those who have hard water deal with on a daily basis. Hard Water and Scaling on Utensils and Appliances

Hard water causes scale to build up in pipes, washing machines and hot water systems. Showerheads become blocked and scale forms on baths, basins and taps. Once installed, the Scalewatcher® will reduce existing scale and prevents futher build up.

Scaling Causes Higher Fuel Costs

Heating scale wastes money and increases boiler running time. With no scale on its heating exchanger, a domestic hot water cylinder takes 1½ hours to heat up. With just 5mm of scale the boiler has to run for over 4 hours wasting 2½ hours of fuel.
